nicki and erin ride a train: session 1
The talented emerging artist Erin Goldberger once again captures my sense of wonder!
I love NY.
1961: My bridge into the City was the Holland Tunnel. Growing up in Jersey City, by the time I was twelve, I would often venture into the magic kingdom of Gotham on a public bus heading to Port Authority. My friends and I would hurry to the back and not say a word until we saw it: the boundary line on the tunnel’s dirty tiled wall that separated the words, New York from New Jersey. As soon as it flashed by, we would shout, cast off our Jersey mien and let the freedom permeate our bodies. The celebration always started with the lighting and puffing of cigarettes, despite the disdainful stares from the adult passengers. We could do and be anything. We were invincible. Once there, we would walk with a New York arrogance, embracing the art of seedy 42nd Street with the same fervor we studied the art at the MET. We were in New York City. Art in motion. We felt so alive, at least until we were back on the bus, stomping out the cigarettes and wild stirrings as we approached New Jersey. Bridge Closed.

Thoughts on a Sunday Night
She is woman,
Almost a quarter of century old
Beautiful and smart
Caught in a love knot
That I want her to untie
But I keep still…
She is woman
Almost a quarter of century old
Beautiful and smart
Who needs to unlace
From pain and déjà vu
And my heart hurts
And my mind screams
I think I know best
For I am woman
More than a half century old
Wrinkled and knowing
That our DNA makes it hard to let go.
She is woman.
